TEMPERATURES are set to rise on the Gold Coast and in the hinterland through the week after Canungra recorded a frigid low of zero degrees.

Meteorologist Rosa Hoff from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) confirmed the town 20km west of Nerang hit a low of zero early Tuesday morning. Nerang was also forecast to hit zero, but the BOM did not have observations to provide.

Meanwhile, Coolangatta hit a low of 9.4 degrees and 10.1 degrees was recorded at the Seaway. Applethorpe was the coldest location in the state at -2.4 degrees.

The coldest July day at the Seaway since records began was on July 18, 2007, when a low of 2.5 degrees was recorded.

Ms Hoff said the relatively low temperatures on Tuesday were caused by a combination of factors.

“Over the weekend we had some southerly air come up from the southern states with good southerly winds to drive it up into Queensland, which dropped our temps’ initially,” she said.

“Then we’ve continued to keep clear skies over the last couple of nights and not having that cloud meant there was nothing really to insulate us.”

Ms Hoff said temperatures were generally expected to climb during the week, accompanied by possible showers.
