Your morning coffee might be responsible for saving a life today, as Gold Coast cafes get generous.

YOUR morning coffee might be responsible for saving a life today, as Gold Coast cafes give back to homelessness.

Bright yellow donation tins have popped up on counters up and down the Coast, with cafes to give $1 from every coffee sold today to the CafeSmart homeless appeal to help those in need.

Customers are also encouraged to match the donation themselves.

The charity’s founder Adam Robinson said most than $1 million had been raised nationally last year, and the money would be kept in local communities.

“We direct (donations) back into local services that are working on the front line, many of which have little public funding to sustain their work,” he said.

More than 700 cafes across Australia, including 17 on the Gold and Tweed coasts will take part in CafeSmart, raising money for homeless charities. Picture: supplied.

“These are organisations serving up hot meals, providing showers and street level medical services, putting roofs over people’s heads, providing legal services, rental advice, employment advice, training and pathways etc, and working towards long term solutions to the homelessness crisis.

“CafeSmart is really a reflection of how our community wants to do something to help people in their neighbourhoods, and solve the problem. It’s a great team effort.”

The annual event coincides with National Homelessness Week which wraps up today.
