Businessman and community leader Nic Rone has been given a huge boost in his political campaign after announcing he would run in Hermann Vorster’s Robina division.

The Bulletin can reveal Mr Rone has the strong support of neighbouring councillor Glenn Tozer, based in the Mudgeeraba division.

Mr Rone has been planning his campaign after Cr Vorster flagged his intention to stand for LNP preselection in the state seat of Burleigh where sitting MP Michael Hart retires at next year’s poll.

Cr Vorster on Sunday won the preselection and announced he would not contest the council election next March. Mr Rone ran against Cr Vorster in the 2016 poll gaining more than 8000 votes to secure almost 41 per cent of the tally. He says the timing is right to run again for council.

“With the 2032 Olympic Games on the horizon, we’re positioned to shine on a global stage,” Mr Rone told the Bulletin.

“I’m committed to ensuring Division 11 reaps the rewards. I believe we have an enormous potential future that will benefit all the families and businesses located here, but we need to grasp that opportunity.”

“I am not a politician, and I believe in working harmoniously, particularly at the local government level, to achieve outcomes for the ratepayers.”

Robina will be home to a new athletes village built for officials and competitors.

Cr Tozer said he had known Mr Rone since 2015 in various roles, and was aware of his commitment to Robina and Varsity Lakes as a business leader.

“What I really like his passion for community,” Cr Tozer said.

“Whenever I speak to him, he always seems to be planning some event or project through Varsity Lakes Community Ltd or Varsity Sports House and there’s no doubt he’s familiar with our eastern neighbouring suburbs over the highway from Mudgeeraba.

“It’s been said – granted, mostly by me – that “when Robina flourishes Mudgeeraba wins”, and a smooth transition in council divisions can be really helpful so I’m pleased to hear he’ll be putting his name forward to contest the council election for Division 11.”

Mr Rone praised Cr Vorster for his “dedication” to the community and promised the same.

“I am eager to continue the work and ensure our residents and businesses maintain a strong voice in the council.”

Mr Rone has “invested” more than 20 years in business and community work in the Robina and Varsity Lakes community. He is the General Manager of Varsity Lakes Community Limited and owner of Helloworld Travel.

“This isn’t about politics; it’s about our community. The timing feels right to step up and drive our vision for this region,” he said.

His community leadership positions include stints as the Chamber of Commerce president and chairman roles for the Varsity Lakes Community Limited and Community Bank,
