Brooke Wood works seven days a week, wakes up at 4am and has a never-ending ‘to do’ list as she runs the top salon on the Gold Coast.

Chevron Island’s BW Hair Studio owner Ms Wood, 33, said she was “extremely excited” and “grateful” to be voted the city’s best hairdresser by Gold Coast Bulletin readers.

Ms Wood began hairdressing aged 16 and opened her own salon two years ago, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I finally gained the courage to open my first salon and the day before opening we went into lockdown,” she said.

Ms Wood said she knew from a young age she wanted to be in the industry.

“I used to sit in my room and play with Barbie’s hair for hours on end,” she said.

Ms Wood said, while she planned on opening another salon in the future, for now she wanted to focus on the Chevron Island studio and launch her first online hair extension course.

“Becoming a salon owner has taught me so much,” she said.

Ms Wood said she started her day at 4am and went to the gym to prioritise her mental health.

“Then I arrive at the salon and jump straight on the books,” she said.

She spends three to four days working with clients and the rest of the week taking care of business.

“When I’m working on the business it involves continuous growth, course creation, content creation, social media, finances, staff management, client interaction and the daily tasks of basic salon operations,” she said.

“(It is a) never-ending to do list for optimal growth of the salon and business.”

The Gold Coast Bulletin’s top 10 hairdressers will be announced on April 26.
