BOM have issued a wind warning for the Gold Coast on Friday

A STRONG wind warning has been issued for Gold Coast waters today and into the weekend.

A STRONG wind warning has been issued for Gold Coast waters today.The Bureau of Meteorology this morning issued Marine Wind Warnings for a number of areas in Queensland, including Gold Coast Waters from Cape Moreton to Point Danger.

Southeasterly winds are expected to reach 30 knots, with 2.5-3m seas.

Tomorrow, there will be a 2m swells offshore and winds will increase north of Point Lookout in the early morning, according to the BOM.

Winds will ease into Sunday.

The strong winds are being caused by a southeasterly surge along the coast.The weather system is expected to move into the Tasman Sea over the weekend.

BOM forecaster Matt Marshall this morning said the winds were expected to ease over the weekend, but the blustery conditions were causing a cooler change in the city.

It is expected to reach a top of 27C on the Gold Coast today, which was about 3C below average.

Mr Marshall said most rain gauges around the Gold Coast had caught less than 10mm of rain overnight, but Currumbin Creek saw about 15mm and 22mm fell in Springbrook.

“Most of the rainfall overnight was further inland in areas like Warwick,” he said.

“There will be a few showers coming in across the next few days and the winds will ease later in the weekend.

“There will be light showers throughout the day on Friday, with a bit of an easing trend in the weekend and a bit of sunshine poking through but I can’t promise sunny days all weekend.” Other areas with active wind warnings include Mackay Coast, Capricornia Coast, Hervey Bay, Fraser Island Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters and Moreton Bay.
