Blue Green Algae: Suspected bloom found in Gold Coast waterway

A suspected blue green algae bloom has been discovered in a popular Gold Coast waterway. Council has warned locals against swimming in the area.

A SUSPECTED blue green algae bloom has been discovered in a popular Gold Coast waterway.

Gold Coast City Council are monitoring the outbreak, which was found in the Broadwater at Labrador’s Harley Park, near Charis Seafoods.

Area councillor Kristyn Boulton warned residents to be careful.

“This naturally occurring organism plays an important part in the marine food chain and is often seen clumped together around the shoreline during periods of calm weather,” she said.

“It will naturally disperse in time. It does produce very low levels of toxins which are generally not high enough to be harmful to human health.

“As a precaution, residents are advised to avoid swimming in the natural swimming enclosure at Harley Park or where the organism is readily visible.”
