A YOUNG man followed a teenage stranger off a bus and violently robbed him after a night out boozing with friends at the casino, a court has been told.

Blake Douglas Heke, 20, followed his victim, 16, and another man from the bus stop to a Miami unit complex on August 18, 2018 and said: “You owe me $500.”

He then yelled “do you know who I am?” before telling them his name.

Heke punched his victim and a scuffle ensued.

During the fight, Heke grabbed a chain from his victim’s neck, valued at about $400, and placed it in his pocket.

The victim suffered a lump to the head, bruising and cuts to his face and hands.

Heke was not arrested over the incident until nine months later when police matched his DNA to blood found at the scene.

He told the police he could not recall the fight as he had been drinking at the casino with friends on the night of the incident.

Heke pleaded guilty to robbery with violence in the Southport District Court.

Judge Nicole Kefford sentenced Heke to two-and-a-half years in prison, wholly suspended. Convictions were recorded.

“The complainant was not someone that was known to you, (they) just had the misfortune of being on a bus at the same time you were when you were intoxicated,” Ms Kefford said.

Heke’s barrister, Nick McGhee, said it was an “unsophisticated offence committed by a highly intoxicated young man”.

It’s not the first time Heke has been before the courts for a violent offence. Last year, he was sentenced in Southport Magistrates Court after bashing a security guard in a Surfers Paradise Subway store.

Mr McGee said Heke had previously had a problem with alcohol but since being placed on a probation order for the Subway assault he had addressed the issue.

Heke was also ordered to pay $400 to the victim for the jewellery.
