Coomera’s Linda Duarte, 35, can see the population rising before her eyes - she said the northern end of the Gold Coast has become extremely popular over the past few years.

“I’ve lived in Coomera for over eight years,” Ms Duarte said.

“Lots of people have moved here for sure. People from Victoria and New South Wales (have moved) to Queensland after the pandemic I think. And Coomera I think because of the housing price, people are looking.”

Ms Duarte said those who have migrated from interstate have found it easier to get a house or a rental property in northern suburbs like Coomera.

But with more people expected to flock to the city amid critical infrastructure upgrades such as the Coomera Hospital, she said it may become very competitive to find a home.

“The infrastructure is getting better though (because of it) and the Coomera hospital is coming and if I want to sell the house that will be good for me,” she said.

Mermaid Beach resident Rafaella Ferrari, 35, said the Gold Coast was attracting far more people from overseas as well, particularly post pandemic.

“In my opinion I think Australia is not prepared for the people that are coming from overseas,” Ms Ferrari said.

“Everyone wants to come to Australia, especially Queensland.”

The Gold Coast city council’s light rail project is set to help ease congestion on the city’s roads, but Ms Ferrari said the construction had become a hindrance to Mermaid locals as she combats heavy traffic right on her doorstep.

“My husband has a business there - and it’s still going well but not as it should be because of the construction,” she said.

“But everyone wants to come to the Gold Coast - because of the weather, maybe the lifestyle.

“Especially after Covid people are moving from all parts of Australia to the Gold Coast.”
