Australia cinema pioneer Terry Jackman appointed AM on the 2020 Queen’s Birthday Honour list.

An Australian cinema industry pioneer who calls the Coast home is one of 50 to be appointed an Officer of the Order Australia on the Queen’s Birthday Honour list.

WHEN Terry Jackman was a young boy, he never thought his first job at Birch Carroll and Coyle would lead to a momentous career in the entertainment industry.

“Today, I still can’t work out how I have done it,” the now 78-year-old.

Mr Jackman, a former Tourism Queensland chairman who formed Pacific Cinemas Pty Ltd in 1989 and is well-known for his role with the Crocodile Dundee movie, has been named an Officer of the Order Australia (AO).

For his distinguished service to the community through support for educational and medical research organisations, tourism and business, he is one of 50 Australians to receive an AO title.

The cinema industry pioneer said wanted to dedicate the award to the Gold Coast.

“I have spent all my life promoting and talking about the city,” he said.

“It’s the best place in the world. The weather, water and beach is incomparable.

“There are a lot of people in the world who have done a lot better things than I have.

“I can’t believe it and I am delighted and humbled to receive the honour.”

At the age of 15, Mr Jackson decided to leave school and start work as an office boy at Birch Carroll and Coyle.

“I started selling movies to the public,” he said.

“I was a bit of dill when I left school at 15 and I was so glad I found something I loved and was good at it. The rest is history.”

By the age of 30, he was the CEO of Birch Carroll and Coyle.

Mr Jackson said some of his career highlights included starting Movie World and SeaWorld, building Australia’s biggest Hoyts cinema complex in Sydney and “turning it into a successful business”, starting airconditioned cinemas in Queensland and being apart of Crocodile Dundee.

Mr Jackman said his love for entertainment led him to the tourism industry because he loved giving “people a chance to enjoy themselves”.

Mr Jackman is also a patron of Northcliffe and Mermaid Surf Clubs, Bond University Rugby Club and supports the Mater Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Australia Lung Cancer Research. In 2003, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.

Mr Jackson said he wanted youngsters learn to how to “work hard, be nice and help others”.
