NOW this is a croc.

A picture taken in 1905 proves the two crocodiles found on the Gold Coast in the past two years are not so unique.

On June 22, 1905, rumours a crocodile had been living in the Logan River north of Coomera were confirmed when local storekeeper Alf Hinds, his brother Jack and local publican Charles Rumpf pulled the reptile’s dead body onto the river’s banks.

A newspaper report at the time claimed the 3.83m crocodile had been shot a few days prior.

“Logan Village was in a state of excitement this morning when it became known that the alligator scare was not of a trifling nature, as the saurian had really been caught,” the Brisbane Courier quoted a local resident.

A man wrote to the paper claiming he had seen crocodile tracks in 1870 at Ormeau and they could have been made by the same animal.

The Brisbane Courier cited rumours the crocodile was given to a well-known Brisbane couple nine years’ before – a Christmas gift from friends in the state’s north.

“The night after this remarkable ‘present’ arrived in Brisbane, it escaped from the case in which it had been carried, and as no trace could be found, it was surmised it had made its way to the river,” the newspaper reported.

“This surmise was strengthened when a week or so later a fishing party reported having seen a strange monster resembling an alligator off Fisherman Island.”

Yesterday, a Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage spokesperson said Gold Coast crocodile Boris was healthy after construction workers found him on Queen St this week.

“We’re looking for a new home for him at this stage, and he should be there by next week,” the spokesperson said.
