A man accused of robbing a Coolangatta bank on Tuesday has been refused bail, with a Magistrate telling court he was not satisfied he was an “unacceptable risk” to the community.
Adam Cusack, 48, applied for bail in the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, two days after he was extradited to Queensland. It followed his arrest in Northern New South Wales on Wednesday night about 7.30pm near the Pacific Highway at Ballina.
He appeared in court by video link from the watch house on Friday morning, charged with armed robbery.
The duty lawyer submitted an application for bail on his behalf, saying Cusack had been
“planning to see his children over the Christmas period”.
The duty lawyer also described the prosecution case against him as “circumstantial”.
But the prosecution objected to the application for bail for multiple reasons, including complications with the bail address.
Magistrate Finger told the court: “I am far from satisfied he is an acceptable risk of failing to appear and reoffending.”
Cusack, who was remanded in custody, is scheduled to appear in the Coolangatta Magistrates Court on February 5 for a next mention.
An interstate manhunt was sparked on Tuesday after witnesses described a male entering the NAB branch on Griffith Street around lunchtime allegedly wearing a face covering and armed with a knife before escaping on foot.
