UPDATE: A KOALA that fled up a tree after being hit by a car at Hope Island has been taken to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary with a suspected fractured skull.
The native animal was hit by a car on Hope Island Road at about 1pm, the delicate rescue mission took close to two hours, but the koala was finally taken into care about 2.40pm.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is caring for the animal which will need medical treatment.
EARLIER: WILDLIFE workers and fire crews are performing a delicate rescue where a koala was hit by a car and scurried up a tree with suspected serious injuries.
The accident happened at about 1pm on Hope Island Road near Monterey Keys Drive.
The shocked koala climbed straight up a nearby tree after the incident and passing motorists stopped to help and alert the authorities.
One lane of Hope Island Rd has been closed for the rescue operation.
