A MAN is in custody after a dramatic high-speed police chase across the central Gold Coast late last night ended with a spectacular crash in Varsity Lakes.
After allegedly fleeing the scene, the man was found in the yard of a nearby house and was taken to hospital with non-threatening injuries.
The man is yet to be charged.
Police say the man was spotted allegedly driving a white Toyota Camry at 130km/h heading east along Nerang-Broadbeach Road at Carrara with the car’s lights off and driver’s door open.
He was then seen stopping on Gooding Drive and getting a golf club out of the boot before returning to the drivers’ seat and speeding off again.
The Camry was then seen again driving ‘dangerously’ at high speeds and swerving onto the median strip and grass verges of several arterial rides and going through several red lights.
Police attempted to perform an intercept the car while travelling on Mermaid Waters’ Oceanic Drive, however the driver refused to pull over.
Police authorised a short pursuit which was discontinued when the man refused to stop.
Around 9.30pm the car was found upside down after a spectacular crash at the intersection of Christine Avenue and Lowood Court after apparently colliding with the roundabout.
Police say it appears the car hit the median strip and flipped.
At least one tree was destroyed in the crash.
It was shortly after this that officers found the man and took him into custody.
He was understood to have been treated by ambulance officer at the scene for injuries to his legs.
