A 17-year-old has been charged after a group of teens allegedly “punched and kicked” a man – who they met on Facebook Marketplace – in the carpark of a popular Gold Coast shopping centre.
Gold Coast police were called after a 20-year-old man was allegedly assaulted at the Helensvale Westfield Shopping Centre carpark at 6pm on Sunday.
The 20-year-old was attempting to sell his Ford Falcon ute after arrangements were made to meet via Facebook Marketplace.
Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said the 20-year-old arrived at the scene with his mum who was to drive him home after the sale.
“A group of five people arrived in a Holden ute,” he said.
“One of the males then attempted to assault him and demanded the keys and threatened further assault if he didn’t give them the keys.”
The 20-year-old attempted to flee the scene but was caught by the group before they allegedly punched and kicked him.
The group of five people then jumped into the Ford Falcon and their Holden ute and left the scene.
“The victim’s mum tried to block them in as they attempted to flee but they managed to get around her,” Mr Knowles said.
He said the Holden ute had false number plates on it.
Police found the Holden ute at a residence in Pimpama at around 7.30pm on Sunday and arrested the 17-year-old male driver.
Mr Knowles said they also found a phone on which the 17-year-old had filmed the entire altercation.
The Pimpama teen was charged with robbery and due to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
He was held in custody overnight.
Police are urging anyone who has seen a light-coloured Ford Falcon stationwagon with no plates to call them on 131 444.
Investigations are ongoing.
