Man arrested after teen stabbed in Varsity Lakes

The father of a teenage boy stabbed after confronting an intruder at his Varsity Lakes home has praised his son’s bravery during what police say was a random attack.

The 15-year-old confronted the man, who was allegedly armed with a knife and a golf club, and who police claim entered the home through a garage at about 1am on Wednesday.

A struggle then allegedly ensued in which the high school student was stabbed in the side of his torso.

“He was asleep. He sleeps with the door open and saw the bloke at the top of the stairs,” the boy’s father said. “He’s yelled out.

“... He’s stabbed him and my son has called me.”

The boy’s grandmother, a registered nurse who was also staying at the home, brought him downstairs to tend to his wounds while they waited for ambulance crews to arrive, while the boy’s father kept the alleged offender pinned down upstairs.

“I was on top of old mate trying to hold him down. It felt like forever but it was probably pretty quick,” the father said.

“You’re kind of wondering where it (crime) is going to end. Every day there is something on the news. But this is next level. This is beyond anything I could have imagined.”

The boy’s father said his son was recovering well at the Gold Coast University Hospital and had taken the incident “with pretty good cheer”.

“He put up a pretty good fight,” he said.

He was brought in from the watch-house for a brief appearance in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He is charged with one count each of unlawful wounding, enter dwelling and commit, and possessing implements used to commit a particular offence.

Duty lawyer Paul Hamilton, of Legal Aid Queensland, told the court on Wednesday that he had been unable to take instructions from Mr Burns on the “rather concerning” allegations.

Mr Hamilton asked that the case be adjourned to Thursday to allow Mr Burns to speak with the Court Liaison Service ahead of any potential bail application.

Mr Burns was remanded in custody.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Anderson said the 15-year-old injured in the alleged incident had shown great bravery in what was believed to have been a random attack.

“(It was) a huge act of courage on his behalf,” he said. “He’s done an amazing job to defend himself and his family in the house.”

Det Snr Sgt Anderson said police were still trying to establish why the alleged intruder had entered the house.

“That’s a mystery at this point in time,” he said. “We’re conducting investigations into the reasons for that.

“We can assure the public that it does appear at this stage to be a random act. We don’t hold any concerns for any other members of the public.

“It does just appear to be a random attack.”

Det Snr Sgt Anderson said Burns had co-operated with police when they arrived on scene. Police do not believe there were any other break-ins related to the alleged incident.
