Gold Coast girl Charlotte Mitchel seeks help after losing car in flash flood

Can you help? The Gold Coast girl who lost her "golden oldie Honda Accord" to a flash flood is now seeking help.

Wild weather lashes Canberra as severe storms threaten Australia

CHARLOTTE Mitchell was one of the many Gold Coasters who lost their car in the one-in-100-year downpour that flooded the city at the weekend.

The 17-year-old did not have comprehensive insurance cover for her “golden oldie Honda Accord”, is about to start her first year at university and is asking the public to help buy her a new car.

Her old car featured on the front of Monday’s Gold Coast Bulletin, immersed in water after more than 300mm of rain fell in less than three hours on Saturday morning.

Ms Mitchell said she parked her car near her boyfriend’s house on Tallebudgera’s Baratta Street, but “never in a million years” thought she would need a snorkel to find it.

“I got a knock on the door at 5am on Saturday to move her car, but it was too late,” she said.

“It was so scary how much rain there was. It just did not stop.

“I took one look at my car and I knew there was no chance of getting it out

“In an hour it was fully submerged.”

“I was in shock and just heartbroken.

“There was nothing I could do, just stand there and say goodbye to it.”

“I can’t change anything now, but I need help to get a new car.”

RACQ said they had 240 home and vehicle claims lodged across the southeast Queensland after the epic drenching.

Ms Mitchell has set up a GoFundMe page to get a new set of wheels.

“It was a heavy investment six months ago,” she said.

“I really need a new one, so I am asking the public to help me out.

“I need to be able to travel to university this year.”

Her fundraiser CarForChar plans to raise $3500. So far the teenager has raised $660.
