George Christensen resigns from the LNP

The controversial Dawson MP has resigned from the LNP with a scathing attack letter on his former party’s political direction. Read what he had to say.

George Christensen has officially left the LNP after 12 years representing the Mackay region under its banner.

In a letter posted to his Facebook page, the firebrand MP said he had fulfilled his “ethical obligation” to serve out the parliamentary term as a member of a party.

“My resignation should come as no surprise given the public disenchantment I have expressed about the party’s direction, particularly its support of a net zero target and, more so, its failure to take action against vaccine mandates and destructive pandemic policies,” he writes.

“I could go on, but this letter is not the time and place for it.”

Mr Christensen argued the Coalition had betrayed its conservative roots and this propelled his decision.

“I joined the then National Party in the late 1990s because it was the party for conservatives,” he writes.

“In 2022, the Liberal National Party – as an extension of the Liberal Party – seems anything but conservative … and thus, it is no longer my party.

“The party needs to undertake some serious soul-searching about what – and who – it stands for.”

Mr Christensen has kept mum on whether he will pursue politics as an independent or member of a right-wing minor party such as One Nation or Katter’s Australian Party.

Queensland Labor Senator Murray Watt jumped on the announcement to take a jab at the prime minister.

“No even George Christensen is sticking with Scott Morrison. What a rabble,” he wrote on Twitter.
