Richest and poorest Geelong schools for 2023 revealed

An independent analysis of school financial records has revealed which Geelong schools are working with less funding, including our poorest schools with a five-year income of $4m.

The richest school in Geelong raked in more than $222.6m in five years, with parents forking out an average $35,854 per student, school statistics reveal.

An independent analysis of school financial records from the MySchool website has revealed the massive amount of money some schools make every year, as well as how little some schools scrape by on.

According to the analysis, The Geelong College in Newtown had a higher gross income than any other school in the Geelong region.

The school made a gross income of $222.6m combined over the past five years, according to the financial records.

The school’s income increased by 24 per cent between 2017 and 2021.

The $35,854 average cost per student is shown to pay off – Geelong College’s 2022 VCE cohort were the top performers of the region with a median study score of 32.

Corio’s Geelong Grammar School was found to be the region’s second richest school, with a $208.1m gross income.

Its total gross income per student in 2021 was $30,282.

Geelong Grammar boasts a bevy of notable alumni, including King Charles III who attended Timbertop campus when he was 17, and accomplished AFL footballers.

The school with the third highest gross income was Kardinia International College, which made $198.6m and had a total gross income per student in 2021 of $22,828.

Government school Northern Bay P-12 College, which has campuses in Corio and Norlane, came in fourth with $191.5m, ahead of St Joseph’s and Sacred Heart College.

The school is known for high achievers in both VCE and International Baccalaureate.

Wangala Primary School at Belmont was found to have the lowest gross income of any school in the region over the five year period, making just $4.2m.

Its total gross income fell by 3.2 per cent from 2017 to 2021 while the total gross income per student in 2021 was $20,428.

Anakie Primary School had the second lowest gross income of any school in the Geelong region, making $4.4m over the five year period.

Its total gross income increased by 25 per cent from 2017 to 2021 while the total gross income per student in 2021 was $17,245.

Queenscliff Primary School at Queenscliff had the third lowest gross income of any school in the Geelong region, making $7m over the five year period.

Its total gross income increased by 155 per cent from 2017 to 2021 while the total gross income per student in 2021 was $13,271.

The figures include all fees, charges and parental contributions as well as state and federal government funding and any other private sources over five years from 2017-2021.

It does not include any deductions for capital works or debt servicing.

The analysis does not include special schools or schools without complete financial data in MySchool for one or more of the five years.
