A man who was found dead at Geelong’s waterfront on Sunday morning has been formally identified.

On Tuesday afternoon, Victoria Police said the man was a 43-year-old from Whittington.

It appears passers-by made the grim discovery, spotting the man’s body in Corio Bay.

A Victoria Police spokesman said officers responded to reports of a man found deceased in the water off Eastern Beach Rd about 7am.

Eastern Beach Rd extends from the Promenade at Eastern Beach to The Carousel near Cunningham Pier.

It is not yet clear along which part of the popular stretch the man was found.

The spokesman said police would prepare a report for the coroner following the death.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be determined but the matter is not believed to be suspicious,” he said.

Police said they could not comment any further on the matter as it was now before a coroner.
