A Norlane man whose “distinguishable mullet” caught the eye of cops was handed a stint in jail for a series of thefts.

When a service station handed police footage of Shaye Borg, 30, filling a car with petrol and driving off without paying, officers said they immediately recognised him by his mullet and facial features.

Borg faced the Geelong Magistrates Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to eleven charges, including resisting arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, obtain property by deception and possess cannabis.

On an October morning in 2021, Borg, who has links to both Norlane and Corio, was spotted in a McDonald’s carpark in a BMW that was stolen during an aggravated burglary.

While Borg was not linked to the aggravated burglary, he fixed the car with stolen registration plates and was driving it through Geelong.

When Borg caught sight of police in the McDonald’s carpark, he raced back to the car but was wrestled out of the vehicle by officers.

Police searched Borg and found a knife in a scabbard and a small ziplock bag containing cannabis.

In May 2022, about a month after the petrol theft, Borg was spotted in another stolen car that had been fixed with stolen plates.

Borg used a stolen credit card to purchase an energy drink and cigarettes and then drove it to a Waurn Ponds’ McDonalds.

Borg’s lawyer, Paul Tomlinson, said his client has a “repetitive’ history of “being incarcerated, being released and finding himself back in custody soon thereafter” on similar charges.

Mr Tomlinson said that with this poor history, a “term of imprisonment is the only sentence” available to the court.

Magistrate Peter Mellas agreed, telling Borg jail was the only option.

Mr Mellas said the “mix of offending”, including the “low-level thefts”, was “calculated, thought-through offending”.

Borg was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
