Modewarre’s Tom Hornsey kicks four in Warriors’ 30-point defeat of Anglesea

Modewarre has snuck into fourth place on the ladder ahead of a looming BFL finals series, keeping Anglesea to just one goal across three quarters.

Modewarre has snuck into fourth spot ahead of the BFL finals on the back of four goals from key forward and senior coach Tom Hornsey.

The Warriors, who could have missed the finals if it lost to fifth-placed Anglesea – who rested several players on Saturday for the final home and away clash, including key forward Dylan Pettingill – and Geelong Amateur beat Drysdale, put the result beyond doubt with a 30-point win at Mount Moriac Reserve.

With the aid of inclement weather and a stingy backline, Modewarre kept the Roos goalless for the opening two quarters, and then to just 1.2 in the final term to win 8.8 (56) to 3.8 (26).

In a low scoring affair, Hornsey’s four majors shone like a beacon, securing second place on the BFL goal kicking table with 59 goals behind Lucas Anderson of Torquay (74).

However, a modest Hornsey was quick to direct the attention back to his team, who were missing Josh Finch due to AFLW coaching commitments with Geelong.

“We’re all role players, we’re a team,” Hornsey said.

“We’ve come together ... just doing what we need to do for the team in that moment.

“We’re enjoying our football, which is the key.”

He said the weather helped keep the opposition to just five points in the opening half.

“The conditions probably played into that a bit, it was quite wet and slippery,” he said.

“But our defence held up really strong, it’s a bit of a pillar of ours.”

With the Warriors now taking on the Roos next Saturday in an elimination final at Portarlington Reserve, he expected both teams to look slightly different.

“I wouldn’t say they were at full strength, I don’t think either side were,” he said.

“It will be interesting to see who they play this week.

“We’ve got a couple to come back, it’s going to be a tough selection this week to see who gets on the park.

“Josh Finch didn’t play ... so he’ll be likely to be in next week.”

While he was reluctant to single out teammates for outstanding performances, he praised the work ethic and dedication of Tom Worpel, brother of Hawthorn midfield James.

“He’s been phenomenal, the work he’s been putting into his football and the results he’s getting,” he said.

“He’s a key part of our team.”

He also praised the commitment and patience of the Warriors, who did not have access to its home ground for training and games for a large chunk of the year due to irrigation works.

“We got off to a slow start,” he said.

“We had some growing pains going through that as a club.

“We were training on back paddocks.

“But we’ve clicked as a team, we’re a good tight group.”
