Police are investigating after a man alleged stole about $8000 worth of cigarettes from a Newtown supermarket.

A man allegedly fled a Newtown supermarket with about $8000 worth of cigarettes, and police are calling for public assistance to track him down.
In a post to the Eyewatch – Geelong Police Service Area Facebook page, police said officers were investigating a theft at a Newtown supermarket on September 9.
“Investigators have been told a man attended the store on Shannon Ave at around 6.40pm, leant over the unattended front counter and took a large box of cigarettes from the store without paying,” the police said in the post.
“It (is) believed the man fled with (about) $8000 worth of cigarettes.”
Police have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.
The man was wearing a black cap, grey hooded jumper and brown cargo pants.
