England facing critical GP shortage

LARA doctor Cameron Loy has won the highest accolade awarded by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Dr Loy, a GP at You Yangs Medical Clinic, has been honoured with the Rose-Hunt Award.

The Rose-Hunt Award is bestowed upon an RACGP fellow or member who, in the opinion of council, has rendered outstanding service in the promotion of the objects of the RACGP, either by individual patient care, organisation, education, research or any other means.

Dr Loy’s impact on areas including general practice medical education and mentorship and advocacy and leadership at both a state and national level contributed to his win.

Dr Loy, who held the role of RACGP Victoria faculty chair for four years, said receiving the Rose-Hunt Award was a “true honour”.

“I was speechless,” he said.

To mark the honour he will receive a medal.

Dr Loy has been practising as a GP for about 20 years, and has been at You Yangs Medical Clinic for 15.

“In that time I’ve watched kids turn into adults, I’ve watched families grow, I’ve helped people through all sorts of various problems they’ve had,” Dr Loy said.

“The thing that’s great about being a GP is long-term contact with the community.”

Dr Loy is especially interested in assisting with vulnerable populations in custodial health and addiction medicine settings.

As a Shepherd Foundation trustee, Dr Loy has been involved in delivering philanthropic research funding to many GPs.
