Former Geelong brickie David Bainbridge remembered as generous, loving man

A popular former tradie’s sudden passing has left many in the community in mourning.

A POPULAR Geelong brickie has been remembered as a generous and loving member of the community, following his sudden passing.

David Bainbridge, 51, died on Sunday, July 31, following a cardiac arrest. The former bricklayer, who had experienced varying forms of homelessness over the past five years, passed away the day before National Homelessness Week launched.

An outpouring of tributes followed Mr Bainbridge’s death, with his sister Fiona revealing she had been inundated with messages of support and kind words from those that knew him best.

“The last week, it’s been so comforting to hear how much he was loved,” Ms Bainbridge said.

“He was so loved. The past week of hearing all these stories, and all the people ringing, it’s been so comforting to know he was loved. He was just that great guy on the inside.

“He was accepted, and he found his people. I’m just so pleased he was seen for the great guy he was.”

Ms Bainbridge said she was fortunate to spend his last day by his side in Geelong hospital, as he passed from complications following a Friday morning cardiac arrest.

Just a week before his passing Mr Bainbridge shared his story publicly while speaking about the need to save Geelong’s only nightly non-referral after hours service providing warm meals, access to clothing and personal hygiene items to people in need, The Outpost.

The Outpost Inc. President Raema Ash this week issued a heartfelt statement following Mr Bainbridge’s death.

“On behalf of The Outpost Inc we express on our sincere condolences to David’s Family and to all those who knew him and had the pleasure to call him a friend,” Ms Ash said.

It is understood homelessness support service Lazarus House in Geelong is organising a ‘Dave’s Day’ service on Thursday, before Mr Bainbridge’s funeral on Friday.
