A bedroom was engulfed by fire when a blaze broke out in a Grovedale home in the early hours of Saturday.
Firefighters were called to the Meadowvale Drive home after triple-0 callers reported seeing flames coming from a house about 2.22am.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said crews arrived to find a fire in the upstairs bedroom of the home.
It’s understood the blaze was caused by a fan heater.
“Crews worked quickly to contain and extinguish the fire, with the scene deemed under control at 2.40am,” she said.
The residents of the house, who were at home at the time of the fire, were not injured.
Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria were also called to the scene.
FRV and CFA crews responded to more than 150 heater fires from May 2024 to March 2025, with sleeping and living areas the most common room of fire ignition for incidents that result in serious injuries or death.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said it was important to have working smoke alarms installed in all bedrooms, hallways and living rooms.
He also urged homeowners to keep heater and fire areas clear of clothing and washing.
“It goes without saying, but please reconsider where you place your washing to dry,” Mr Heffernan said.
“It’s a popular setup to place them near our heaters and wood fires, but a mistake that can be easily avoided.”
According to FRV, portable heaters and fireplaces should never be left unattended or on while people are sleeping.
Police have been contacted for comment.
