A man who was left fighting for his life after he was shot by police earlier this year has appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court over a raft of alleged offences, including a violent carjacking.

Cory Dean Abbott, 37, of Norlane, appeared via video link and did not enter pleas to a number of charges, including aggravated carjacking.

Mr Abbott has also been charged for holding a firearm without an appropriate licence, driving while disqualified, assaulting a police officer, common law assault and conduct endangering life.

It is alleged that about 4pm, Friday, February 17, Mr Abbott approached a man driving a Holden Commodore on Iona St in Norlane and attempted to sell him a different Commodore.

The alleged victim, a 75-year-old man, said he declined Mr Abbott’s offer, leading to Mr Abbott grabbing the keys in the ignition.

After a brief scuffle, Mr Abbott allegedly pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot the driver before driving off in the car.

Less than 30 minutes later, officers were able to track the car and Mr Abbott to nearby Warrawee Ave.

When police arrived at the scene, it is alleged Mr Abbott was armed and confronted the officers. In response, police opened fire on Mr Abbott, who was then taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Mr Abbott’s lawyer, Shelly Buhecker said she was waiting to analyse the police’s body worn camera footage and was seeking counsel’s advice on how the matter was going to proceed.

Mr Abbott will be back before the court on August 1.
