Corio man Jake Quinton threatened to kill the mother of his child, court hears

A Corio father who thought he was going to be burnt alive has faced court for telling his ex-girlfriend he would put her in the ground.

Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A Corio man who threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend told the court he was tortured and almost burnt alive by three men.

Jake Quinton, 26, faced the Geelong Magistrates’ Court from a remand centre on Friday and pleaded guilty to criminal damage, making threats to kill, handling stolen goods and theft from a petrol station.

In May this year, the mother of Quinton’s three-year-old daughter was waiting on food when she unknowingly opened the door to her ex-boyfriend and could not stop him from barging into the home.

The court heard an “erratic” Quinton was “ranting and raving” about a new girlfriend when he pulled out a box cutter and lunged at the victim while his child watched.

He claimed the victim picked up a baseball bat first.

Weeks earlier, Quinton was talking to the victim on the phone when he told her he was going to “put you in the ground c**t”.

In March, Quinton went to the victim’s house and did a burnout on the street outside.

He sped away only to return moments later with another man and began yelling at her to be let in.

After 15 minutes of yelling, he walked to where the victim’s car was parked and punched at a side mirror, causing it to break.

That same night, he called the victim and said, “you’re going to pay, you’re dead. I’ve been down the side of your house, you’re dead”.

Quinton was also in court for putting stolen number plates on another car and filling up a car with petrol he did not pay for.

Defence lawyer Jonathan Barrera told the court Quinton was the victim of family violence and had been assaulted in custody.

He also said Quinton was tortured in October 2018 by three men who forced him inside a house at knifepoint, tied him to a chair, cut up his legs, poured lighter fluid on him and threatened to set him on fire.

The three offenders were convicted and sent to prison.

Mr Barrera said as a result, Quinton suffers from “PTSD and major depression”, and has been “finding custody particularly difficult”.

Magistrate Anne McGarvie took Quinton’s troubled past into account but told him he’s doing “exactly the same” to his family.

“Your daughter knows you are being violent in relation to her mother and she is now going to grow up and be traumatised by that.

“While I accept that you were very badly affected by the violent offending against you by people you knew and thought you could trust, that’s exactly what you are doing (to someone) who knows you and believes she can trust you,” Ms McGarvie said.

Quinton was sentenced to 11 month’s imprisonment.
