Cats legend Joel Selwood has thanked the community for its “overwhelming love and support” after his older brother Troy tragically died earlier this month.

Cats legend Joel Selwood has thanked the community for its love and support after the tragic death of his older brother Troy.

The beloved father of two and former Brisbane Lions player died at his Geelong home on February 4.

More than 1000 mourners gathered for his funeral service last week at GMHBA Stadium, with his three brothers each paying tribute to their best mate.

Joel posted a black and white photo of his family hand-in-hand at the funeral to Instagram on Tuesday night.

Joel Selwood thanked the community for their love and support by posting this family photo to Instagram on Tuesday night.

“The past two weeks have been some of the toughest we’ve faced as a family,” he wrote.

“However, we are truly grateful for the overwhelming love and support from so many who have been touched by Troy’s passing.

“While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace. Thank you for standing by us during this difficult time.”

Troy, 40, played 75 games for the Lions and captained Geelong’s VFL team to a premiership in 2012.

He also worked at the Cats as an administrator and scout and more recently ran Geelong Grammar’s football program, helping budding young athletes kick off their careers and reach their potential.

He has been remembered for his “generous spirit” and how he deeply cared for people, striving to make their lives better.
