Geelong is gearing up for a stressful Thursday night, as legions of loyal Cats fans get ready to cheer on their boys in a huge final in Adelaide.

A year off from September last year has seen the Cats come back in ripping form, finishing third at the end of the home and away season.

It sets up a fascinating qualifying final matchup with second place Port Adelaide.

A group of dedicated fans will be heading up the Western Highway as part of the club’s Cats Convoy, with cheer squad member Cheryl Rossiter one of them.

“We’re leaving from the club at 8am, then we should get there about 4pm, we’ll watch the footy then head home,” Ms Rossiter said.

“We love it, I’m a massive Cats fan. I’m looking forward to it.”

Another diehard, Helena Erwin, said she was banking on a Cats triumph, which would see them move straight into a preliminary final in two weeks time.

“I believe we can do it, we have a full side now and not many injuries,” she said.

“We’re excited. It’s great to do interstate to support the boys.”

While a loss wouldn’t see the premiership dream fully extinguished, it would make the path significantly harder, forcing them to play a semi final against either the Bulldogs or Hawks they would need to win to make a preliminary final.

While Thursday’s game will be played in Adelaide, their next match, regardless of result, will be played at home, most likely in Melbourne.

“At least we won’t have to travel next week,” Ms Erwin said.

Port Adelaide got the better of the Cats when they last met in a round nine thriller in May, a match in which the Power’s star midfield of Ollie Wines, Zak Butters and Jason Horne-Francis were too good.

The Cats hold a winning record at Adelaide Oval, winning four of their last five games at the venue.

Ms Rossiter said she’s optimistic about the team’s chances, but it might be a grim bus ride home otherwise.
