Woman dead after bus, car collide at Pakington St, Geelong West intersection with Autumn St

Authorities have expressed their sympathies over a “tragic” Geelong West collision in which a 53-year-old woman died.

A Geelong West woman has died following a “tragic” crash between a car and bus at a Pakington St intersection Thursday morning.

It’s understood the bus and a small yellow hatchback collided, near the corner of Autumn St, about 8am.

The bus was filled with passengers at the time of the crash.

Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach said Geelong Highway Patrol officers would investigate the cause of the fatal collision.

“It is believed a yellow Kia hatch was travelling along Pakington Street when it collided with a bus at the intersection of Autumn Street just after 8am,” Constable Seach said.

“The driver of the Kia, a 53-year-old Geelong West woman, died at the scene.

“There were a number of passengers on the bus at the time of the collision and no one was injured.”

Constable Seach said the bus driver was assisting police.

It’s understood Safe Transport Victoria was notified of the incident and that the bus driver was offered counselling.

A Department of Transport spokesman said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with all those impacted.”

There were no reports of significant injuries to the driver or passengers.

The hatchback suffered serious front damage and was partially mounted on the kerb. The bus sustained side damage.

By 8.30am, police had cordoned off a section of the street and were seen placing cones on the road.

The road was reopened about 11am and police said on Thursday afternoon they would continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Officers are appealing for anyone with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward.
