Update 1.06pm: NT Police have revealed what sparked a Darwin CBD street to be closed off after a hazmat warning was issued.
Gardiner St in Darwin CBD was closed off from about 11am on Friday after a hazmat alert was issued on the NT incident map.
Multiple officers and fireys attended the scene with fire trucks blocking off both entrances to the small street.
An ambulance vehicle was also in attendance, as well as the hazardous materials recovery unit.
NT Police just after 1pm said the cause behind the closure was a reported broken or faulty battery.
“Police and NTFRS attended the scene and removed the battery,” an NT Police spokesperson said.
There is no risk to the public.
Initial 12pm: A street in the Darwin CBD has been blocked off by police and fire investigation units, with police issuing a hazmat warning.
NT Police and Fire units have blocked off both ends of Gardiner St in the CBD.
The hazardous materials recovery unit are also on the scene.
A police officer on the scene declined to answer questions as to the nature of the incident, but said nobody was injured.
An incident map alert states PFES were first notified of the incident about 11am with the scene still active more than an hour later.
