There were at least four serious road accidents at the weekend, leading police to remind the community to “keep safe” this festive season.
Assistant Commissioner Michael White spoke to media on Monday morning, hinting at an upcoming major road safety campaign, Operation Angove, which will be launched later this week.
It comes after St John NT emergency communications manager Taleaha Dawson reported four road accidents involving serious injuries at the weekend.
According to Ms Dawson, a 53-year-old cyclist was struck by a vehicle on the Stuart Highway in Parap on Friday about 6.30pm.
“Fortunately, the rider was wearing protective equipment and was transported in a stable condition to Royal Darwin,” Ms Dawson said.
An NT Police spokesperson confirmed that the driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol and had stopped the vehicle immediately to provide first-aid.
NT Police also alleged the cyclist failed to give way to the vehicle.
Later on Friday about 9pm there was an accident involving two vehicles in Marrara near McMillians Rd and Malak Crescent.
“A vehicle collided with the passenger side of another car in a T-bone crash,” Ms Dawson said.
“The 27-year-old driver was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital with back pain and is in a stable condition.”
Ms Dawson reported a further two accidents on Saturday.
About 9.30pm a 44-year-old female driver crashed into a power pole in Woodroffe, Ms Dawson said.
The driver was transported to Palmerston Hospital with minor arm injuries.
“In Dundee about 11.30pm a 45-year-old man was found by passersby after a motorbike accident near Mermaid Cct,” Ms Dawson said.
“The man was wearing an open-faced helmet and was transported to Royal Darwin Hospital with a potential traumatic brain injury.”
Mr White brought it back to basics.
“Respect the fatal five — no drink driving, no drug driving,” Mr White said.
“Ensure you don’t use your mobile phones and stick to the speed limit and the conditions, especially with the wet season weather.
“Always wear your seat belts — that’s really critical.
“We don’t want to be turning up to people’s houses giving them bad news at this time of year.”
