Residents in the Northern Territory’s desert regions have been warned to prepare for possible flooding as heavy rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Dianne moves towards the Territory.
A flood watch has been issued for the Tanami, Central Desert, Western Desert, and MacDonnell Ranges, with widespread rainfall of 15-70mm expected from Sunday evening.
Some areas could see falls of up to 100mm, leading to significant river and creek rises, localised flooding, and potential road closures.
The Territory heartland has copped a drenching over the past week but ex-tropical cyclone Dianne is going to further add to the problem.
Authorities warn that remote communities and homesteads may become isolated, urging residents to check road conditions before travelling.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service has reminded people to stay away from flooded waterways, avoid driving through floodwaters, and move to safety while conditions allow.
For emergency assistance, residents can call 132 500.
This warning comes just days after police rescued four stranded travellers, including a six-year-old boy, from floodwaters near Finke.
The group had been missing for two days after becoming trapped while travelling between South Australia and the NT.
With more rain on the way, authorities stress the importance of preparation and vigilance.
