THREE Gold Coast dogs that are “best friends” just love an audience as they show off their incredible tricks together.

Since they were pups, Red, Oi and Blue have entertained spectators at Village Roadshow’s Australian Outback Spectacular.

The Australiana dinner and show has been an institution on the Gold Coast for more than 14 years and the pooches play a special part.

Their trainer, Heidi Mackay, said the tail-wagging boy band “spend each and every day together and are best friends”.

“We honestly all have the best time together,” she said.

“Since birth our red kelpies Red and Oi have learnt tricks to perform in the shows, like carry a six pack of beer on their back, jump on the back of a quad bike, and chase after the bad guys.

“Our two year old blue heeler called Blue is our photo dog and the community love getting a picture with him doing tricks each night at the front entrance.

“They all love it.”

The dogs, owned by Village Roadshow, perform with more than 25 other animals, including an 11-year-old border collie called Digger.

After work each night they relax at Ms Mackay’s Mount Tamborine home with their pooch pals, including French bulldogs Porky and Coco, and boxer Gracie.

Ms Mackay said Red and Oi previously played Red Dog in the Outback Spectacular’s Return of High Country Legends show for four years, and alternated the role each night.

“The audience would remember ‘Oi Red’ being called out numerous times during the show and the dogs would always respond,” she laughed. “But no one would ever know the role was shared with two similar dogs.”

The red kelpies now perform four nights a week in the new Heartland production, which highlights the harsh realities of the Outback.

The Bulletin is on a quest to find Australia’s top dog, with a range of prizes up for grabs including a doggie makeover, a trip to Sydney and a $5000 Petbarn voucher.
