It will be anything but the sound of silence for Darwin-based producer Cyril Riley, who performs under the stage name CYRIL, when he stumbles into Darwin’s biggest music festival later this year.
CYRIL rose to the top of the charts in 2024 — a breakout year for the Top End DJ — after his 2023 release, Stumblin’ In, went viral, racking up more than 539 million streams on Spotify.
His later remix of American heavy metal act Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence nearly ended up just as popular, amassing more than 427 million streams.
With BASSINTHEGRASS set to take over Mindil Beach on May 17, CYRIL encouraged Territorians to head down.
“I’ve got some good surprises,” he said.
“Come and enjoy it; it’s going to be fun.
“I’ll play some new music and remixes, as well as the originals; it’ll be really good.”
While the fame came as a surprise to the 27-year-old, he said he was mostly focused on releasing new music.
“No artist knows what’s going to happen with their tracks; even someone like Ed Sheeran can’t predict it,” he said.
“It feels good, but now I’m ready for the next one; I just see it as a job.
“It’s good because I’ve always wanted to make music and have fans; I take it with a grain of salt, keep to my roots, stay humble, and keep the ego out of it.”
As plans brew for a potential Darwin stadium, which would have the capacity to host major music events, CYRIL said he supported the idea.
“I think it’d be great,” he said.
“It’ll help with tourism and selling tickets, especially during wet season so people won’t get wet and equipment won’t be destroyed.”
CYRIL, known by many for his bucket hat, ruled out a BASSINTHEGRASS-themed bucket.
“Mate, this bucket hat stays on; it’s my pride,” he said.
“We’ve got to keep it.”
