70-year-old Moulden man allegedly faces pitchfork-weilding intruders

An elderly Palmerston man has faced a pair of alleged intruders, all three tumbling down the stairs in the altercation. Read what happened.

September 30: An elderly Moulden man required treatment in hospital after confronting two armed home intruders, the trio tumbling down a flight of stairs during the altercation.

At 11.50pm on Saturday two men aged 35 and 21 arrived at the Moulden Tce home armed with a pitchfork and a hammer, entered the property and climbed the rear stairs onto a verandah, police allege.

The sole occupant of the home, a 70-year-old man, disturbed the alleged intruders and all three fell down the stairs in the incident.

Police said the resident suffered a cut to his forehead and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment, while the alleged offenders fled the property by jumping a rear fence.

The two alleged offenders were found and arrested on Sunday, and have each been charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, theft and going armed with an offensive weapon at night.

Assistant Commissioner Janelle Tonkin said she did not know if the 70-year-old was known to the alleged offenders, nor if his age contibuted to him being a target.

“It’s difficult to say at this stage if this man was targeted because of his age,” she said.

“We certainly do see a number of elderly people unfortunately targeted, some of that is opportunistic offending.

“This certainly would have been a terrifying incident, and he is fortunate to have only escaped with the injuries that he did receive.”

To other older Darwin residents concerned for their safety, Ms Tonkin said “be alert, but not alarmed”.

“It’s about being vigilant around your own personal and residential safety. Make sure your gates are locked at night, make sure your front doors are locked.”

Manhunt underway for 29-year-old Norman Kernan

A manhunt is underway for a 29-year-old man whose parole was revoked on Thursday.

Norman Kernan is believed to be in the Darwin area.

Members of the public are warned not to approach Mr Kernan to immediately contact police if they see him.

Man arrested for alleged drug driving after pedestrian crash

September 27: A 55-year-old woman has been taken to hospital after an allegedly meth-addled driver hit her with his car in Palmerston.

Northern Watch Commander Sean Patterson said the woman was intoxicated when she stepped in front of the man’s car on Essington Ave about 9.15pm on Thursday.

Sergeant Patterson said the driver tried to brake and evade the woman but clipped her with his vehicle’s side mirror.

He said the man, 57, stopped to help the woman until police and paramedics arrived.

Sergeant Patterson alleged the man returned a positive drug test and was taken to the Palmerston Watch House, where he tested positive for methamphetamine.

He said the man was issued a notice to appear at a later date, having been charged with driving with drugs in his blood and driving with an expired license.

The woman was taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm.

Abandoned vehicle believed to be involved in attempted ram-raid

September 26: NT Police are investigating an attempted ram-raid incident on a business along the Stuart Highway in the early hours of the morning.

The Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports a Toyota Troop Carrier had been left abandoned next to a damaged business in Yarrawonga about 4am Thursday.

Police investigations confirmed the vehicle had allegedly been stolen from a business address in Berrimah hours earlier.

Forensics have been completed on the vehicle and investigations are continuing.

Man flown to Top End hospital after ‘serious harm’ incident in Wadeye

Territory Police are calling for information in relation to a serious harm incident that occurred last week in Wadeye.

At about 4pm on Thursday, September 19, police were notified by Wadeye clinic staff that a 49-year-old man had presented with injuries that were believed to have occurred on the previous Tuesday evening, the 17th.

The man‘s condition deteriorated and he was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The Major Crime Squad have been investigating the incident and have spoken to a number of witnesses.

Police believe the man was with two men within the community when he was assaulted.

Bottle thrown: Man followed home, threatened at knifepoint

Police are searching for the occupants of a vehicle who followed a man home and stole his phone at knifepoint.

Northern Watch Commander Kaye Pemberton said the 28-year-old victim had been driving outbound on Trower Rd when his car was struck by a projectile beer bottle about 11.50pm Sunday.

Sergeant Pemberton said the occupant of a black SUV had thrown the bottle at the man’s vehicle.

She said the occupants in the SUV then followed the man from Dripstone Rd towards Brinkin, to his home.

Sergeant Pemberton said an argument broke out when they arrived at the victim’s house, and the victim was threatened with a knife before his phone was stolen.

Sergeant Pemberton said the man was not injured in the incident.

She said the incident was under investigation, and urged anyone with information or dashcam footage of the two vehicles travelling “in close proximity” to contact police on 131 444.
