Cygnet could well be on its way to claim another premiership after making a statement win

Cygnet are the SFL Community League’s premiership favourites and despite having being faced with plenty of challenges early in the season, there is one which has coach Lachy Watt most excited.

Cygnet are flying at the top of the SFL Community League but it’s a path which hasn’t come without its challenges.

The Port are the clear premiership favourite after the first rotation of game this season but coach Lachy Watt said some challenges remain ahead.

Again on Saturday, Cygnet proved why it’s so powerful with a 61-point win over Dodges Ferry.

Watt, who played his first game of the season, said he doesn’t expect the top-five to change much.

“I think the past four weeks will be what the top five will be for the rest of the season, if you include us in that as well,” Watt said.

“To come away now playing everyone in the competition once and having not dropped a game is awesome.

“We’ve battled through a few injuries as well and the ability from the players who are coming up from the reserves to be able to come up and play their role on the day has really contributed to being undefeated so far this season.

“Having selection dilemma is a good thing to have, it means people are missing out but it means that the players who are in ultimately have to continue to perform on the Saturday if they want to keep their spot.

“It is a tough spot to be in as a coach but it's a really great problem for the club to have.”

It wasn’t all on the Port’s terms during the 10-goal drubbing of another premiership contender with Cygnet kept to just one point in the third quarter.

Dodges Ferry coach Jesse Tegg said the first half was the most disappointed he has felt this season.

“They just came to play early, they were more physical, they made the ground feel quite small in the way they set which shut down our running game,” Tegg said.

“I do have high expectations on the group, I know where we are at and I know we are learning.

“But that first half on Saturday was the most disappointed I have been this year because it was just so uncharacteristic of us.

“But other than that, we have been in games against good teams, the Huonville game, I never really thought we played our best footy but with found a way to stay with them and we only went down by 18-points.

“We have definitely taken some massive steps from last year but I would expect the group to continue to grow.”

The Sharks sit equal third with four wins and three losses, the losses coming against Lindisfarne by 20-points in round 1, Huonville by 18-points and now Cygnet by 61-points.

Dodges Ferry will take on Lindisfarne next week with likely Zac Clark (quad) and Ruben Tomkins (ankle) expected to miss.

While Cygnet will take on Hobart with Jacob Lister a potential to miss with a hamstring injury.
