Police officer allegedly threatens Gold Coast man

“IF you get aggressive with me, I will counter that and I will beat you.”

An encounter between a police officer and a motorist in February 2019 is under investigation after a video was uploaded to social media showing the officer telling the driver, he was prepared to use “fatal force” during the traffic stop.

The 30-second clip shows a Gold Coast Road Policing Unit officer involved in a heated argument with the unidentified driver after he was pulled over in Burleigh Waters.

It’s unknown what was said in the lead up to what is shown in the clip, although sources have told The Bulletin there’s “a bit more to it than what was in that video.”

It starts with the officer telling the driver “I will do what I have to do,” before the person filming asks, “what are you going to do?”

The officer replies, “If you get aggressive with me, I will counter that and I will beat you.”

It quickly heats up when the person filming says, “OK what are you going to counter it with? I’m sitting in my car.”

To which the officer says, “my use of force options … anything from fatal use of force … to capsicum spray”.

The pair begin yelling over each other as the argument becomes further heated.

The driver then starts yelling “Mate you’re a joke, you’re a joke,” over and over again, before the officer says, “All I did was pull you over,” before walking away.

In a statement a Queensland Police spokesman said the 37-year-old Broadbeach Waters man was pulled over for not having a number plate on.

“On February 16, last year a 37-year-old Broadbeach Waters man was intercepted by Gold Coast Road Policing Unit on Bermuda Street, Burleigh Waters,” the statement reads.

“The driver was issued two infringements notices for fail to have number plate attached and alter number plate.

“The recording uploaded to social media only shows a selected portion of the interaction.

“The footage has been reviewed and is being considered.”
