The Gold Coast’s ongoing drug problem prompts ‘dob a dealer’ campaign

THE latest drug crime statistics for the Gold Coast have revealed what the Gold Coast’s most popular drug is. Water analysis and drug testing of waste water has shown which drugs are most commonly being abused.

GOLD Coasters are being urged to dob in a dealer to help rid the streets of dangerous drugs.

In August 711 drug offences were reported on the Gold Coast, an increase from 694 in July.

The ‘Dob in a Dealer’ campaign was launched at Ormeau yesterday with police, MP Michael Crandon and Crime Stoppers.

The campaign was last run on the Coast in 2016 resulted in drug offences dropping from a whopping 10,465 offences in 2015 to 5135 drug offences this year to date.

Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO Trevor O’Hara said recent water testing during a national waste water survey to test for drugs expelled in urine showed “higher levels” of methamphetamine in the Gold Coast region.

“We hope to within the next two weeks have an increased reporting on the Gold Coast in regards to drug dealing particularly related to meth,” he said.

Mr Crandon said drug use was rife, particularly in the northern Gold Coast.

Senior Constable Tracey Clouston from the Queensland Police said drug crime was a cause of ongoing problems for police.
