Taiwanese national, Crystal Chao, killed in horror crash at Chinderah in Northern NSW

A TAIWANESE national has been revealed as the victim of a horror crash that closed the Pacific Motorway for several hours at Chinderah on Sunday afternoon.

A TAIWANESE national has been revealed as the victim of a horror crash that closed the Pacific Motorway for several hours at Chinderah on Sunday afternoon.

Crystal Chao, 30, was the driver of a Toyota that collided with a Holden just north of the Murwillumbah exit.

It is believed Miss Chao was not wearing a seatbelt, causing traumatic injuries.

Paramedics performed CPR on the international student in a desperate attempt to revive her, but she couldn’t be saved.

What caused the tragic crash is still unknown and forensic crash officers from the Tweed Byron Local Area Command continue to investigate.

Miss Chao had been studying on the Gold Coast for the past two years between trips around the globe to destinations including New Zealand, India and Thailand.

Pablo Méndez Ángel, who studied with Miss Chao at a Gold Coast english school in 2014, said he was devastated to hear of her passing.

“I had the opportunity to study with Crystal in Australia in 2014, she was amazing, very happy and always smiling,” he said.

“I didn't know her too much, but the time that I spent with her, she always was laughing.

“This is sad, you never think that someone with that energy and such a good person is going to leave life so soon.”

A 27-year-old female passenger of Miss Chao’s and a 62-year-old female driver of the Holden were taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

NSW police will prepare a report for the Coroner once the crash investigation is complete.
