A MYSTERY assailant remains at large after beating a Runaway Bay man with an extendible baton during a brazen home invasion — but his accomplice was not so lucky.

Accomplice Steven Robert Mathieson, 36, faced Southport District Court on Monday, wearing a bright blue T-shirt and khaki pants.

He pleaded guilty to two downgraded property crime charges, entering premises with intent by breaking in at night and entering premises with intent, after he struck a deal with the prosecution.

Crown prosecutor Gary Churchill told the court Mathieson, dubbed a “recidivist property offender”, stood guard outside on March 4, 2016, while his disguised co-offender violently robbed the resident.

The victim suffered a testicular injury in the ensuing beating, but eventually managed to ward off the attack and get the unidentified man to leave.

“The male offender beat the occupant of the house, demanding money and drugs before taking off with jewellery,” Mr Churchill said.

“The beating took place with the use of an extendible baton that caused a laceration to the complainant’s hand and a swollen testicle.”

Mathieson broke into a car down the road after assisting in the robbery while on parole.

Mathieson — with a 15-page criminal history in Queensland including assaulting police — fronted Judge Catherine Muir after spending three years locked up for court order breaches and the crimes before the District Court.

The Gold Coaster has spent much of his life behind bars including finishing Year 10 in jail after a troubled upbringing.

Defence barrister Robert Glenday told the court Mathieson’s abusive uncle “fed him heroin” as a youngster.

Mr Glenday argued Mathieson had already spent “a lot of real time in custody”, though Judge Muir rebutted “he’s committed a lot of real offences”.

Judge Muir considered “things got out of control” during the “brazen and disturbing” robbery.

Mr Glenday described Mathieson as an occasional labourer and concreter who had been tackling substance abuse problems during his longest stint behind bars.

Mathieson was not aware the robbery would devolve into violence, Mr Glenday said.

Mathieson was given a year-long probation order, considering time already served.

Mathieson planned to visit Centrelink for crisis funding for a bus fare to Gladstone to live with his sister.
