TWO Gold Coast streets have been named as some of the worst in Queensland for drivers running red lights.

The list, released by motoring body RACQ, reveals the intersection of Margaret Ave and Gold Coast Hwy in Broadbeach as the second worst with 1247 red light notices issued in 2018.

Kumbari Ave and Smith Street intersection in Southport came in at sixth on the list with 808 issued.

RACQ has now taken aim at drivers over the data, which shows 26,000 drivers were caught running red lights in Queensland last year.

RACQ spokeswoman Lauren Ritchie said across Queensland a driver was caught running a red light every 20 minutes.

“It’s unfathomable just how many people are risking it all just to avoid having to stop for a few minutes at a red light,” she said.

“The reality is every time a driver runs the red it’s not just other drivers who could be hurt, but pedestrians and cyclists too.

“It’s clear too many motorists are choosing to run a yellow light to gain an extra few seconds and drivers need to know the road rules.

“Yellow means stop if safe to do so, not go faster.”

Drivers who don’t stop for a red light risk a full $400 fine and three demerit points.
