A GRIEF-stricken Sophie Lauren Chambers would not listen to reason when she got behind the wheel of her car while drunk 18 months ago.

The result was almost fatal and changed the lives of Colin and Jan Clarke for ever.

Chambers, 26, pleaded guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm while intoxicated in the Southport District Court on Thursday and was sentenced to almost three years in jail. She had faced court twice previously on minor drink-driving charges.

On the afternoon of August 15, 2012, the single mother was drunk and struggling to cope two days after her brother’s funeral when her car veered into the path of the Clarkes’ Harley Davidson motorcycle on Currumbin Creek Rd.

The impact flung the retirees into the air and the court heard they were lucky to be alive.

Mrs Clarke was in hospital for two months with multiple broken bones including a pelvic fracture. Her husband suffered several fractures and serious nerve damage.

Chambers, who told the court how sorry she was, will be released on a suspended sentence after seven months.
