Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A GOLD COAST mum known for her community work was almost four times over the blood alcohol limit and travelling almost twice the speed limit when she crashed her car at Reedy Creek, a court has been told.

Anne-Maree Pitcorn, 40, fronted the Southport Magistrates Court today where she pleaded guilty to the dangerous operation of a vehicle and drink driving.

She was ordered to serve 12 months probation and had her driver’s licence suspended for 10 months.

The court was told Pitcorn sped along the suburban Barden Ridge Rd at 97km/h on October 5 at 8.30pm. The road has a speed limit of 50km/h.

Pitcorn lost control of her Mazda 3 and crashed into a tree, a pole and a parked car.

She later recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.189, almost four times the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.05.

Defence lawyer Joshua Boorman said the behaviour was extremely out of character for his client, who had been in an abusive relationship for many years.

On the night of the crash, Mr Boorman said Pitcorn drank a bottle of red wine and asked her partner to get her some cigarettes.

When her partner refused she got into the car and drove away before crashing.

Mr Boorman said his client was a community-minded person who cared for five children.

In sentencing Magistrate Mark Howden noted Pitcorn’s good character and said the courts needed to denounce drink driving.

“You’re probably very lucky that you didn’t cause further damage, or more damage, to yourself or other people,” Mr Howden said.

“Clearly you have made a significant contribution to your community and the children you look after but you have done a very dangerous thing on this occasion.

“The court needs to send a strong message to people that they just simply just cannot drive when they’re intoxicated.”
