POLICE are hunting an axe-wielding thief who stole a cash register from a popular northern Gold Coast coffee shop in a daring early morning raid.
Despite the shock, the two cafe workers were back serving coffee this morning.
At 5.30am this morning a man armed with a small axe entered the Zarraffa’s on Eggersdorf Road where he demanded money from a female employee.
The man then used the axe to cut through the cords of two registers, taking one.
He was last seen leaving the scene in a recent model, blue Holden Commodore with distinctive mag wheels.
No one was injured.
Customers called police and waited at the shop until police arrived.
The man had his face covered with what appeared to be a white T-shirt wrapped around his face, and was last seen wearing a yellow high-vis vest with long, dark sleeves, dark shorts and tanned work boots with no laces.
A spokesman for Zarraffas declined to comment.
Ormeau locals have urged the community to support the shop and its staff.
“Let’s show our local Zarraffa’s some community Spirt Ormeau so they can have twice what was in the stolen registers,” local Maryna-Bernice Botha said.
Anyone with any information in relation to this incident is urged to contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
