A former tyre shop manager who stole thousands from a Burleigh Heads employer to fund a drug habit was caught out on CCTV, a court has heard.

Jason Timothy Haaring, 33, of Springwood, pleaded guilty in Southport District Court yesterday to stealing $20,185 as a clerk from Goodyear Autocare Burleigh Heads between November 4, 2013 and May 19, 2014.

Crown prosecutor Denise Darwen told the court Haaring’s history of dishonesty stretches back to 2009, when he sold a laptop which a buyer never received.

Ms Darwen said Haaring engaged in “rather sophisticated fraud”.

She said cash flow issues were noticed by owners of the Burleigh business and Haaring was repeatedly warned about not following money handling procedures.

One of the owners, an accountant, also noticed Haaring was signing cheques to unauthorised providers.

CCTV cameras were installed and Haaring was caught “stealing cash from the business on two separate occasions”.

In one instance, Haaring took payment from a customer and it was never handed to the business, Ms Darwen said.

Haaring told the court: “I’m sorry for what I did and I’ve done the best I can since I’ve been released from jail to get my life on track.”

Defence lawyer Michael McMillan, who said Haaring was now working at Woolworths and doing well with supportive references, told the court his client spent 201 days in jail before sentence.

He said the “trigger” for his offending was “using a lot” of cocaine but Haaring had “put his drug problem to one side” and “his life is back on track”.

Judge Ian Dearden warned Haaring “if you stuff up you’ll go back inside”, sentencing him to 18 months jail with immediate parole.
