KYM Cobby warned her son to be careful after the family received “life threats” in the months leading up to her murder on a Gold Coast street, a court has been told.

Mrs Cobby was found severely beaten on Arthur Payne Court, Worongary on November 12, 2017.

Police were still investigating the death threats when Mrs Cobby died.

Her ex-husband Andrew John Cobby has been charged with her murder. In the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday, he was committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

During yesterday’s hearing, Cobby’s son Luke Cobby said his mother had told him the family had been threatened over money allegedly owed.

“It would have been something along the lines that there had been some life threats and people were not happy with us,” Luke Cobby said.

He said his mum had been conscious of security.

“She did tell me to be wary and we should lock up the house and be a bit more cautious,” he said.

Luke Cobby told the court his mother was concerned about Josh Roberts and his father Malcolm Roberts who had allegedly made threats to the Cobbys.

It is alleged Andrew Cobby swindled the Roberts’ out of money in an investment scam.

Luke Cobby said about three months before his mother’s death he had seen the two Roberts sitting in a car outside Kym Cobby’s home for about half an hour.

He said the pair became aware the Cobbys were looking at them.

“They did seem like they were in a bit of a hurry (to leave) after that,” he said.

Josh and Malcolm Roberts both told the court yesterday they had been to Kym Cobby’s house only twice, for less than 10 minutes at a time.

Once they knocked on the door asking Kym Cobby where her ex-husband was.

The second time, they were dropping off furniture Andrew Cobby had left behind when living in Josh Roberts’ apartment.

Gold Coast police officer Detective Senior Constable Aaron Bryant said he was investigating the death threats.

But he was concerned Kym Cobby had been coerced into making a complaint by her former husband.

Sen Const Bryant said when he tried to contact Kym Cobby, Andrew Cobby would reply.

He told the court that when she came into the station to make the complaint, Andrew Cobby was with her.

Sen Constable Bryant said police were investigating Andrew Cobby in relation to fraud when Kym Cobby died.

Barrister Tony Kimmins asked if he put the “brakes” on the death threat investigation while fraud inquiries were being made.

“Yes,” Sen Const Bryant replied.

Andrew Cobby will remain in custody while he awaits trial in the Supreme Court in the coming months.
