SOLDIER Chris Carter was “angry” the day he killed his ex-wife Renee Carter and her convicted paedophile boyfriend Corey Croft at their Gold Coast home, a court has been told.
Under cross-examination in his double-murder trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court this morning, Carter told the court from the stand he was “angry” when he put the knife in the hand of Ms Carter following the stabbing and when he saw Mr Croft at the Upper Coomera property.
Christopher Robert Carter, 39, has pleaded not guilty to murdering Renee Carter and Corey Croft at their Skylark St home on January 20, 2015.
Carter is being tried by a jury of six women and six men in the Brisbane Supreme Court.
Carter’s defence barrister, David Brustman QC, instructed by Howden Saggers Lawyers, said the fact Carter killed Renee and Mr Croft was “not in dispute” but the issue in question was whether the crown could show he had the intention to murder them.
He also argued Carter acted in self defence after Ms Carter came at him with a knife.
During cross examination, crown prosecutor Glen Cash QC asked Carter whether killing the pair was a release of anger after years of disagreement.
“Once you started you couldn’t stop?” Mr Cash asked.
“No I wanted to stop,” Carter said.
“It was a release ... after yes (I was angry) ... but at the time I was protecting myself ... after when I couldn’t believe what I had walked into it felt like that ...”
The court heard Carter left the knife in Ms Carter’s hand following the attack and left the property.
“I can’t say why I did that ... I was extremely angry at the time,” he said.
Mr Cash put it to Carter that he had dumped his clothes and deleted text messages after the killing to avoid detection.
“Putting a knife in her hand is not an attempt to cover up? Dumping clothes is not an attempt to cover up? Deleting messages was not at attempt to cover up?” Mr Cash said.
“That’s correct,” said Carter.
“I knew at some point I was going to be charged but the guilt I felt was for what was going to happen to my children. I didn’t want them (Ms Carter and Mr Croft) dead.
“What I did was instinct. If I had more time to think about things, it might have gone differently.”
The defence case was this morning closed and the jury will return tomorrow to hear closing arguments.
