A CLEANER at two Gold Coast schools has walked free from court despite being caught with 16 pairs of girls underwear he said were souvenirs of one-night stands.

Darryl Roy Huntley also had 506 images in an album titled “young girls with their legs spread open” and two more that were of a worse nature when police searched his home in March last year.

The cleaner at Arundel State School and Miami State High School yesterday pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material, receiving tainted property and stealing.

Huntley also had sporting equipment, tissues and stationery stolen from the schools.

The Southport District Court was told Huntley admitted he had an “inappropriate sexual fetish” that was possibly caused by sexual abuse from a male relative when he was a child.

While he told police the underwear from girls sized 3 to 6 were souvenirs, the court was told there was no evidence to suggest he carried out any sexual acts and that one pair still had a tag on them.

The images featured girls aged 5 to 6 and 14 to 15 that were cropped to feature the torso area while the other two involved girls kissing or lying on a bed together.

A psychological report also mentioned the discovery of a sex toy.

Judge Paul Smith said the charges were of a serious nature.

“There’s actually children involved,” he said.

“Without people wanting to get these images there wouldn’t be a market for it.

“You say it was more of a fascination possessing these images and you never in a million years would touch a child but you accept you think you have a problem that you need help for.”

Judge Smith said Huntley denied masturbating over the underwear.

He said Huntley witnessed inappropriate touching at the age of 12 between two family members which led to inappropriate touching of him by a close male relative who apologised two years ago.

The psychological report said Huntley was socially immature and isolated and showed some signs of stress, anxiety and depression.

He is supported by his parents and has casual employment after losing his job as a cleaner.

Judge Smith said the report said Huntley might have channelled his sexual needs into porn but denied any urge to do anything more and experienced remorse and guilt.

He sentenced Huntley to a four-month suspended sentence for the images and 18 months probation for the other charges.

Convictions were recorded.
