A MAN has serious head injuries after he was allegedly bashed for his food on the streets of Surfers Paradise overnight.

Police claim the Tugun man, 29, was sitting with friends on a bench at Orchid Ave about 1am when two men approached the group and took some of their food.

It is alleged a fight broke out and the 29-year-old was punched, causing him to lose consciousness and fall, hitting the back of his head on the ground.

Surfers Paradise man Rickey Lefoe, 27, appeared before Southport Magistrates Court this morning charged with grievous bodily harm.

Police allege Lefoe punched the Tugun man during the fight and fled the scene.

Defence lawyer Antonious Abdelshahied, of Moloney MacCallum Abdelshahied Lawyers, told the court Lefoe would apply for bail tomorrow.

The case was adjourned.

The victim remains in Gold Coast University Hospital in coma.

“He is in a stable condition but in an induced coma,” Detective Acting Inspector Greg Aubort said.

“Our thoughts go out to the family of this person. It’s not the sort of news you want to wake up to.”

Insp Aubort said there was no indication that the two groups knew each other.

“This matter is before the courts so I can’t go into it too much but the reality is often with these offences it starts with the most innocuous event with a little bit of food or a throw away comment,” he said.

“Our entertainment precincts are safe night precincts. We invest a lot of time and resources into those areas and yet occasionally silly decisions are made on the spur of the moment. There are very large consequences for those decisions.”

Insp Aubort could not confirm if it was a “once punch” attack.

The attacker fled on foot and witnesses contacted authorities, police allege.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.
